If your client's KPI is Google organic position, you should probably keep paying for it.
It is also not an AEO platform. And the agencies trying to stretch Clearscope into the AEO job are going to spend the next two quarters explaining to their clients why their AI visibility numbers haven't moved despite the content grades being green. This is a feature-gap analysis, not a hit piece. The two tools solve different problems — and most mid-market agencies in 2026 will end up running both.

Clearscope is a content optimization platform that grades drafts on a letter scale (A++ down to F) against the top Google search results for a target keyword. It uses NLP to extract terms and concepts the ranking pages cover and then tells the writer what to add. It is, by industry consensus, near-best-in-class at this. Pricing as of 2026 (per the Clearscope pricing page): Essentials $189/mo, Business $399/mo, Enterprise custom.
What it does not do: track citations on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, or Google AI Overviews. Monitor brand mentions across publications. Surface Reddit or YouTube source intelligence. Produce share-of-voice reports. Output white-labeled agency client deliverables. Compute a per-engine AEO score with confidence intervals. Tell the agency owner whether their client appeared in a Day-One AI shortlist for a category-defining query yesterday.
None of this is Clearscope's fault. They're an SEO content scoring tool, not an AEO platform, and they don't pretend otherwise. The mistake is on the agency side — assuming a green Clearscope grade on a pillar page translates to AI visibility. Per Ahrefs' February 2026 analysis, only 38% of pages cited in AI Overviews rank in Google's top 10. Optimizing the page to look like the Google top 10 is a weak proxy for AI citation probability.
The eight feature gaps that matter for agencies
Gap 1: No per-engine citation tracking

The variable that correlates 0.664 — earned brand mentions in trusted publications — is outside its scope.
Gap 5: Schema recommendations tuned for Google, not AI engines
Per Frase, FAQ schema makes AI Overview appearance 3.2× more likely. Per Growth Marshal, generic schema actually underperforms no schema (41.6% citation rate vs 59.8%); attribute-rich Product/Review schema reaches 61.7%. Clearscope can suggest H2/H3 structure but does not produce attribute-rich Product/Review JSON-LD with pricing, aggregateRating, and product specs — the schema variant that actually moves AI citations.
Gap 6: No agency-side white-label client reporting
Agencies need monthly client-deliverable reports with their logo on top. Clearscope is an editor seat tool: it does not produce a per-client share-of-voice PDF, a per-brand AEO score, a multi-brand portfolio dashboard, or anything an agency can hand to a CMO at a quarterly business review.
Gap 7: No multi-engine ranking with confidence intervals
Valid AEO measurement requires confidence intervals on rankings (not single point scores) and split-by-engine reporting. - Editorial quality consistency. Clearscope grades give junior writers a target. The grade itself is a useful editorial standard even when the underlying KPI is not Google rank.
- SEO content briefs. Clearscope produces a usable brief from a target keyword in minutes. Agencies running a content-machine workflow benefit from the speed.
What Clearscope cannot do is the AEO job. If the client's CMO is asking why the brand isn't showing up in ChatGPT, Clearscope is not the tool that answers the question. That is a different layer of the stack.

The implication for agencies is that AEO is not optional 2026 budget — it's the line CMOs already plan to spend on. The agencies that arrive at the QBR with a working AEO measurement stack will keep the retainer; the ones explaining why their Clearscope grades are green but the brand still isn't in ChatGPT will lose it.
